International Literacy Day is on 8th September. I’m excited to share with you some fun ideas to learn literacy using alphabet pancakes.

These are the ingredients that we usually use to make pancake: 1 egg, 1 cup of self raising flour, 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 cup of milk.
However, you can use any pancake recipe or buy a pancake mix from your local supermarket.

Put your pancake batter into a squeeze bottle like this one. We didn’t have any on hand, so we just used a clean, empty burger sauce bottle.

Once you fill up the bottle, you can start creating the alphabet pancakes. Cook it on a greased, non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Flip over when you notice bubbles appearing. Transfer to a plate.

Fun literacy games using alphabet pancakes:

⭐ Spelling.
Use alphabet pancakes to spell a word on a plate.

Word scramble.
Scramble a word (using alphabet pancakes) and ask another person to solve it.

⭐ A for apple.
Pick an alphabet randomly. Everyone must say a word that starts with that letter. The person who answers the quickest could choose the next letter (or eat it!).
Harder challenge: choose a category. For example: if you pick ‘animal category’ and your letter is ‘A’, then everyone must say an animal that starts with letter ‘A’ (e.g.: ant, alpaca, etc).

Hope you enjoy these fun ideas and “the Adventures of a Pancake Bowl” video I put together with my kids.
